Bowie was a basketball player at Lebanon High School, where he was named McDonald’s All-American and Parade All-American, as well as national player of the year. In 1979, he enrolled at the University of Kentucky, where he played for coach Joe B. Hall’s Kentucky Wildcats. Bowie was selected for the United States Olympic men’s basketball team – which was unable to compete in the Moscow Olympics due to the US boycott – and was named a third-team NCAA Basketball All-American by the Associated Press after breaking the Kentucky record for most blocked shots in a game with nine. The athlete sustained his first leg injury at this time, a stress fracture that forced him to miss two seasons. Bowie was selected second-team All-American and featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated after returning to the court in his last season with the Wildcats. He was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers as the second overall selection in the NBA Draft in 1984, ahead of Michael Jordan. Due to his injury-plagued collegiate career, ESPN dubbed the Blazers’ selection of Bowie as the worst draught choice in North American basketball history. Bowie was named to the NBA All-First Team during his rookie season, but he sustained a leg injury again the next season. In his following two seasons with the Blazers, Bowie had two additional injuries, including a hairline fracture of his right tibia. During his four seasons with the Blazers, he only played in 63 games out of a potential 328, averaging 10.5 points per game.
