Welsh can showcase their scoring talents

Wales qualified for Euro 2016 and Euro 2020 and are just two wins away from earning a place at Euro 2024, with their quest starting in their Group D clash against Armenia in Yerevan.

Rob Page’s side moved into second place after last month’s superb 2-1 victory over Croatia at the Cardiff City Stadium.

However, they will be preparing themselves for a tricky test away to the Armenians, who themselves have an outside chance of qualification.

Wales were expected to struggle to score goals after superstar Gareth Bale’s retirement but they have netted eight times in their previous three fixtures and can bag at least another couple against Armenia at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium.

Page’s side reached the halfway point of qualifying with only four points from four games, leaving them very little room for error.

But they kept their hopes alive with a 2-0 success away to Latvia and hauled themselves into second place with a remarkable 2-1 victory at home to Croatia.

The Welsh are level on points with the third-placed Croats, but they took four points from the two matches between the sides. So their better head-to-head record could be crucial as the qualification group stage approaches a conclusion.

Croatia would expect to finish off with a pair of wins away to Latvia and at home to Armenia, so the onus is on Wales to avoid any slip-ups.

The Welsh would appear to have tougher remaining games – away to the Armenians and at home to Turkey – but the context of the group could work in their favour.

Armenia are entering the last chance saloon, knowing that only six points from their final two games would give them a chance of progressing.

But the Armenians sustained a 2-0 loss away to basement boys Latvia last month and it would seem that their campaign is running out of steam.

Oleksandr Petrakov’s side have no other option than to push for the victory, but they are likely to leave spaces at the back – and that could allow the Welsh to continue their scoring spree.

Armenia vs Wales tip 1: Over 1.5 Wales goals @ 21/20 CopyBet

Spurs star Johnson should make his presence felt

Brennan Johnson has had an injury-hit start to his Tottenham career but is becoming an important player for Wales and has every chance of scoring against Armenia on Saturday.

The 22-year-old missed the October internationals because of a thigh strain and will be desperate to make an impact at the business end of qualification.

Johnson has featured regularly for Spurs over the past few weeks and popped up with the opening goal in the Londoners’ 2-1 loss at Wolves.

He seems to be approaching peak fitness. His searing pace and eye for goal make him a tempting anytime-scorer wager at 11/5.

Haroyan unlikely to escape the referee’s attention

Wales looked in big trouble when they lost 4-2 at home to Armenia in June, but they have recovered superbly and look worthy favourites to claim maximum points on their trip to the Caucasus.

Page’s men are on a three-game winning sequence and must have taken huge confidence from last month’s success over Croatia, which has put them within reach of qualifying for another major tournament.

The Welsh will only be interested in pushing for victory and their approach is likely to be mirrored by the Armenians, who are in a must-win situation.

Backing over 2.5 goals on the bet builder has obvious appeal and the returns can be further increased by a punt on Armenian captain Varazdat Haroyan to collect his fourth yellow card of the campaign.
