David Corenswet
Is he the new IT boy?
Opinions on his acting or talent?
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 342 | August 17, 2020 12:13 PM |
I don't know, he is basically in Ryan Murphy's projects and a lot of his actors basically work with him.
The guy is handsome but being declared an it boy and having a good career ahead yourself are two very different things. Time will tell

He is very nice looking but devoid of charisma, you could see that in Hollywood. Also, not even an ass shot.

He's more "Clark Kent" than "SUPERMAN". His "Fuck Factor" is naturally low for some reason. But seems like a perfectly pleasant person.

(I learned of Shawn Mendes from this site because everyone was crazy over him. And it went on for months, maybe a year, and then he was forgotten. Lather, rinse, repeat.)

He has a girlfriend, I posted her Instagram in a couple of the many other threads that have been started on him.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 8, 2020 7:24 PM |
I read once that Robert Redford credited his career to his bad skin/acne scarring, because he said without that characteristic he would have been too pretty and only a pretty young guy, and as he aged he would have been thrown away like women actors are because he lost his only perceived asset.
Corenswet is pretty. Hope he is saving his coins.

R16 already said he has an Instagram girlfriend.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 8, 2020 7:58 PM |
Weird. I thought Redford's bad skin developed later in life. I never noticed he had acne scars when he was young and beautiful. I thought he developed some skin condition related to his beard.
It's amazing that anyone would cast him in anything as a romantic leading man if he had super bad skin. Maybe that's why he got cast opposite striesand. I thought it was completely unbelievable that a man who looked like him would fall for a fat, big nosed strumpet like her. Yuck.
Brad Pitt got lazer treatments, as did Ray Liotta, which transformed them. James Woods horrible skin added to his appeal as a villain or unlikable unsavory character,
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 8, 2020 8:04 PM |
^^^ R21, I think what you meant to write is, "James woods is a horrible asshole of a person deserving of the horrible skin, enabling him to inhabit a villain or unlikeable unsavory character, rotting from the inside, just like he is."

by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 8, 2020 10:57 PM |
Eh, he might make it as the internet’s boyfriend for a few months, but he’s not really “It” boy material, also if it was going to happen it would have already. Finn and Cody both flirted with “It” boy status, but it wasn’t sustainable for either of them. Like so many things connected to RM, they start out strong and fall off way to quickly. We should basically call it the “Ryan Murphy Effect.”
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 8, 2020 10:57 PM |

The Hollywood show started out OK and realistic, that first episode when Corenswet has to become a gigolo and put his acting dreams on hold was the potential start of a much better show than what was delivered. It also used Corenswet well, because yes his character is quite good-looking, a little bit talented, but not too special and won’t ever be a big star.
It then descended too far into fantasy to actually be enjoyable.

by Anonymous | reply 84 | July 9, 2020 6:56 PM |
Platt is a good actor but his character is not exactly lovable (you want to slap him half of the time and strangle him the rest of the time)
by Anonymous | reply 85 | July 9, 2020 7:23 PM |
He's very pretty, but I found him lacking in Hollywood along with the rest of the young cast excluding Samira Weaving. The girl who ended up playing the lead in the film supposedly gets the role because her audition is so great and, yet, the clip we saw of her audition was awful.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | July 9, 2020 7:24 PM |
I found david's acting amazing, he is very well rounded....can dance up a storm!!
by Anonymous | reply 87 | July 9, 2020 7:25 PM |
The character doesn't make any sense rationally, and I can't think of many actors who could consistently pull off the charm and charisma of a totally opportunistic, sociopathic social climber who exploits and is unconditionally supported and loved by everyone in his life.
It's just ridiculous. If he were shown to be constantly negotiating and cutting deals and making promises and otherwise ingratiating himself to people who need approval, then I could buy how he could acquire a clan of devotees. But as written, it really is not Platt's fault that he doesn't quite nail it. The only way I can think of the premise being believable is if he were unbelievably gorgeous--but even then, people wouldn't fall on their swords for some smarmy young asshole the way all these people do for him.
He's basically Satan. He is completely amoral. Everyone around him is completely dedicated to him. MAYBE his high school friends might admire his ambition and ride his coattails. But then career politicians in NYC?
Meh, whatever. Poor writing.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | July 9, 2020 7:28 PM |
R86, yeah, it’s incredible to have cast someone who apparently can’t act for that role, as they did here. Unless it was meant to be very ironic.

I think he's too modelesque to be Superman today. Decades ago he would have been perfect, but it seems like with every passing year, every leading man in Hollywood has to be a mega-bodybuilder, and especially in action and superhero movies. Henry Cavill and Brandon Routh are so physically BIG and bumpy. David would lose a lot of his swoony appeal for me if he put on 40 pounds of muscle.

I kind of love that this has become about Windows operating systems. Since it has, I have questions...
From the time I first used a computer at home at age 17 (Windows 95), each new operating system upgrade did indeed seem like a major upgrade. And when Apple products came out—the iPod—iTunes was easy to use and it made sense intiuitively.
By around 2010 or so, iTunes’s navigation baffled me. I couldn’t find options to do the simplest things, such as plugging in my phone and navigating to the music. It had been easy for years and then it seemed impossible.
Around the same time, Windows and MS Office upgrades seemed to do similar things, albeit not as extremely. First there are the near-constant security upgrades and the “click here to enable editing” on documents that are annoying as hell but probably necessary. But Word in particular has just continued to add gratuitous options and buttons for them that every time there’s an update basic editing functions have been moved around and buried for years. Plus, on my work laptop for some reason (maybe because it’s Windows 10?), windows randomly maximize and take up the full screen, etc., or they close seemingly without my having done anything. And then (maybe this is a Dell thing) they did away with the double-clicking that has been standard for as long as I have used Windows computers and instead employ a single click to open documents and a “extended hover over icons” approach to selecting documents instead of single-clicking that often ends up opening them or selecting the wrong ones.
I’m 42 now. I fear that a lot of this frustration might be age related and not really a problem with the software...but damn, it seems like both Microsoft and Apple make some shitty decisions about their upgrades. They don’t have to keep adding features if something is already good enough, do they?
by Anonymous | reply 131 | July 10, 2020 12:08 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 133 | July 10, 2020 12:27 PM |
Why do people put up with those shitty Microsoft products?
I made the leap to Linux 10 years ago and I've never looked back.
And no, I am not a tech person. A fully developed distribution like Ubuntu is much easier and far more dependable than Windows. That's why I use it.
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 134 | July 10, 2020 12:45 PM |
r131, Word has had excessive features for at least as long as I have been using it in Windows, which is since 1999. My perfect version of Word was 5.0a for Mac, back in the '90s. I never needed the updates. I have hated using it for 21 years now. It's not a Mac v. PC thing, either. It's just as awful on a Mac.
I found iTunes to work fine on my desktop PC (a Dell from 1992, which recently went RIP because the sound died). Now I'm using a Dell laptop, to which I have an external HD attached that contains most of my music (75-80 days' worth). I find it difficult to understand exactly how to put music on my phone, but I have managed somehow. Someone else may be able to help you with that specifically. It may help to know your exact model numbers.
The reason I gave up on Apple in 1999 was because I needed a computer that could use Naturally Speaking. I bought one of the rainbow iMacs (turquoise), and returned it for two reasons: the so-called Mac equivalent to Naturally Speaking was useless and two, the damned box offgassed so severely, I was getting huge headaches from it. Apple didn't offer any objection to my return.
I eventually lost interest in Naturally Speaking, and my Dell computer, which used the ME OS, worked just like a Mac. I wish I could have kept using my old Mac, but it was only capable of reaching AOL, not the WWW.
I would probably buy a program identical to the Mac Word 5.0a if it were to be available for today's Windows computers. It had everything I needed and not one thing I didn't need.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | July 10, 2020 12:48 PM |
R134 I can’t exactly go to my nonprofit job of 12 years and demand that they make special accommodations to install Linux software because I find MS Office products’ interfaces annoying. I don’t wield that kind of power.

It is my understanding that David Corenswet suffers from this exact same affliction.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | July 10, 2020 12:57 PM |
R135 I gave up on iTunes. It was just too annoying for me. Songs I had owened for years occasionally disappeared and iTunes showed that I had never purchased them and I had to pay again for many for them to stay in my library. And then there were so many sync issues that I stopped using iTunes on a computer altogether. I still use my phone for music while commuting (on foot) but I never, ever connect my phone to iTunes on a computer because of the weird shit it used to do, and while I download casual-listening music to my phone, music that I really love, I still also buy a CD as a backup because I have had music permanently evaporate from my phone before as well as from iTunes, no longer available for download even though I had already purchased it. If I have to find an archaic way to transfer from CD to digital files for some music, it’s worth it. Apple has taught me not to trust it, sometimes sending songs into my library that I don’t want, and sometimes stealing songs I have purchased.
I do need IT Boy David to fix this shit for me. I am 42, damnit, and fed up with the newfangled tech of these whippersnappers!

What really matters are the CGI effects and what sort of blue tinted color scheme is being used to make everything look dark and depressing. Honestly, in some scenes you can barely see what's going on and rely on the droning voices to give you a clue when to get really depressed.

by Anonymous | reply 152 | July 10, 2020 1:44 PM |
R152 When I read “Coop,” I thought you meant Anderson Cooper.
I do detest Murphy series, but I will DEFINITELY grab the popcorn when the inevitable “FEUD: ANDERSON VS. ANDY” is released.
Ben Platt can play Andy Cohen.
I imagine Murphy will cast Evan Peters as Anderson Cooper because that is just what Ryan Murphy would do.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | July 10, 2020 1:51 PM |
R153 lol I meant Gary Cooper. But that’s a good idea either. Btw I heard Evan Peters is done with Ryan Murphy. So...
by Anonymous | reply 154 | July 10, 2020 1:56 PM |
R154 Meh, then swap Peters for any other stock player. I don’t know. I have not been taken by any of his choices who have been sold to us as breakout stars. I did think Cody Fern was beautiful with his eye makeup but then the ladyclothes attention whoring turned me off.
Dylan McDermott and Connie Britton to me are the real star-stars who maintained dignity and identity, doing AHS and then escaping. Kathy Bates will always be a singular star in her own right. I do love Jessica Lange overall but sadly I think she has been overindulged by Murphy, plus has opted in to be the central figure in too many terrible scripts, and I really associate her with being one of his pets now even as I respect her pre-Murphy work.
So bleach Darren Criss’s hair, or Cody Fern’s Hair, or any other dude’s hair and have him dutifully memorize and poorly recite Anderson Cooper’s words and call it a day.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | July 10, 2020 2:01 PM |
R155 Jessica Lange did a great job in Feud: Bette & Joan and I really like tv show itself but the book it’s better tho. I remember reading one blind item that Jessica is avoiding calls from Murphy. Honestly, I believe it. 😂 P.S. my vote is for Cody Fern!
by Anonymous | reply 156 | July 10, 2020 2:20 PM |
R156 I think Jessica Lange is an immense talent, but I only bought her for fleeting moments as Joan Crawford. She just looks and sounds far too different than Joan.
I know she's roundly hated, but I thought Susan Sarandon was a very, very good Bette in Feud.
But again, the story...ugh! The show would not have been made by anyone but RM, and so how can I fault him? And yet, by the end, the whole spirit of the show, like all his schlock, was basically an Afterschool Special. His work is so frustrating to me.
Cody Fern would be very challenged to play Anderson Cooper. I think he'd need a prosthetic nose, and he'd need to pack on a lot of pounds. Andrew Rannells or maybe Finn Wittrock could pull off the right sort of tight-tee-shirt-with-bulging-biceps look that Anderson depends on. Cody is too modelesque.
I would be highly amused to see Jim Parsons cast as either Andy or Anderson, just to drive them both bonkers.
Darren Criss might actually be able to pull of Andy Cohen, too. Andy tries to downplay his gay mannerisms and is very sensitive when people suggest he's gay, and Darren Criss supposedly isn't gay but plays flamboyant, and so by putting on flamboyance, he might strike that right spirit of Andy's self-loathing. Criss is also good at being smarmy, charismatic and sending off a creepy vibe...so he's kind of a natural Andy! Ben Platt might be a little too likable.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | July 10, 2020 2:29 PM |
Cate Blanchett and Susan Sarandon would have been dream casting in those two roles. NOTHING about Lange suggested Joan Crawford. And the hair and make-up people on FEUD were not able to get around that fact.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | July 10, 2020 2:32 PM |
R158 YES. I can imagine Cate Blanchett pulling off a near-perfect Joan Crawford. I want to see that happen! I never considered her for such a role because she seems too big and too good for TV, but now that she has done a Hulu series, I can imagine it.
Lange is GREAT at being Lange and being creepy and crazy and troubled and victimized and monstrous, but Lange is not good at all at doing any voice but her own voice. And her face is so distinctive it's hard not to see Lange in anything she does.
Blanchett can be a chameleon at least with her voice and her body language. She can really embody different people. She can do the weird haughty pretense that Joan Crawford projected, she can be stiff and perfectly postured, and I would bet money she could mimic Joan's voice in a way that neither Lange nor Faye Dunaway--both great actresses but not great imitators--could do. Blanchett also has a distinctive face, but she can command her posturing in such a way that I think she'd be able to really embody Joan Crawford.
Damnit, now I really want to see Cate Blanchett play Joan Crawford.

R157 yes, I agree, Susan Sarandon's Bette made me want to shake her like she did Miriam Hopkins in "Old Acquaintance". She embodied the voice, the power and the actress's renown wit and laugh. Idk about Criss.. but here’s many people assume that he’s closeted case. I think he would be good choice to play Andy.

Murphy isn't the only one in Hollywood who believes that sticking to the truth or facts is not a requirement to film real life events or making films and shows about real life people. Datalounge is just the perfect forum to anonymously shit on an out and proud producer who hires openly gay actors.

by Anonymous | reply 174 | July 10, 2020 3:42 PM |
R172 I love that he hires gay actors, and I love that he does gay themes. I just really end up EXTREMELY frustrated at the way he executes almost all of his series. They start off as great concepts and then they're usually just so poorly scripted that they end up clunking their ways to dissatisfying resolutions.
I said it above and I stand by this idea: Ryan Murphy's productions could be great if he still conceptualized all of them, perhaps had a hand in writing the first 1/3 or so of the first season, and then had no say over writing whatsoever from that point on. He's a great ideas guy. And he's a great stylist. Beyond Act I, he makes trash of every great idea he has.
I do have issues with his casting. I like that he casts gay people. And I don't mind that he casts gay people to play straight roles, or quasi-straight roles, or bi roles that end up in heterosexual relationships...or whatever. What I dislike is that it seems really obvious Murphy has favorite cast members, and these people are not necessarily well cast in their roles in many cases. AHS, for example, was very well cast and well executed. But then he wanted to repurpose those actors who were cast intentionally in their roles for season one, and so he just shuffled them around and didn't necessarily consider that they'd be good in their specific roles--just that he likes them and wants to work with them. And after a few seasons, that seriously degraded the show for me as a viewer. Sarah Paulson is fine, but she doesn't have to be the fretting chihuahua centerpiece of every single storyline, no matter the storyline. Ugh.
Until Murphy came along, I had always been a huge cheerleader for auteur approaches. Focus groups and too many cooks in the kitchen dilute good stories. But then we get Murphy the TV auteur and he can be his own worst enemy, since he seems to be authorized to proceed without the benefit of a good editor, which he really would benefit from.

Ever since I was introduced to James Charles from the scandal last year, all I can see him as is Joan Crawford. He would be perfect and I think he should transition his life to living, in the ultimate performance art piece, as her. Buy her old house, restore it to peak 40s style, star in movies as her, hell even adopt some children. Ryan can build some shows around her as Joan, maybe remake a few of her classic movies. It could start a whole trend with young actors vying to take over and continue the careers of long dead actors.

I’m reading now Bette & Joan: The Divine Feud and this moment is hilarious: when Crawford was cited as being a major influence on the fashions of the 1930s and the 1940s, Davis growled, “What in the hell did she ever contribute to fashion—except those goddamned shoulder pads and those tacky fuck-me shoes?”
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 196 | July 10, 2020 5:55 PM |
Joan was an extremely stylist and attractively ‘handsome’ woman. Neither she nor Bette were sex bombs—which has a lot to do with why their careers lasted so long, and Bette acknowledged that, as did Katharine Hepburn—but Bette was distinctive looking and a true talent, and Joan was statuesque and commanding looking as she aged. Young Joan was nothing spectacular to look at in her youth, except when she smiled, but her features and her styling aged into something sublime.

I saw him in that 2018 movie, State of Affairs (watch it on Hulu), his acting was rather stilted or maybe it was the script. Plenty of scenes of him fucking older women for political power. r235 it actually makes sense for the movie. He's basically an orphan that's unemployed after his boss resigned from office. He's desperate for a way onto a Presidential campaign and trades sex for some access. A guy that looks like David Corensewt in DC could believably go that route.

I think people forget that this series is not meant to be accurate, the idea is that it becomes this fantasy world where we see what could have happened. That is the magic in this, that it is possitive, yes it is not perfect, but is totally gives that vibe in an awesome way.

R262 Yes, many of Murphy’s pet projects cast pretty young men in terribly written roles.

I think that's the major problem of this series. It started out as a (pseudo?)realistic view on Old Hollywood and then continued to wishful thinking. They could have prevented the confusion by just calling the whole show 'Dreamland'. Problem solved. Everybody would have known that this is not about real Hollywood.
by Anonymous | reply 266 | July 12, 2020 2:36 PM |
Murphy also has been hailed for being dedicated to creating a lot of roles for older leading ladies, which is pretty pioneering for Hollywood. However, it’s sad to me that actresses like Jessica Lange and Katy Bates praise him for this as they have to act out schlock. It’s maybe two notches above Trog.

Slogging on towards the end of Hollywood, I've decided to give Corenswet the benefit of the doubt. The script is just so awful--only Taylor Holland and Joe Mantello come off well.
But according to IMDB he doesn't have much coming up.

I wanted to love this show, but it was clearly written and produced by first year film students. Passions made more sense then this. If you're gonna write a fairy tale, then write a fucking fairy tale. This was just awful. I'm still rolling my eyes. Thank God for David and Jake Picking.

If that's how he got the EP credit, then I can understand. But nothing else makes any logical sense.

Hollywood was made for the woke demographic. I don't mean that in a derogatory way. It's just is what it is. The show was never intended to be liked by those who, say, love classic Hollywood history.
To me it was a fun ride. Pretty and likable cast and characters. Feelgood entertainment. That's the kind of entertainment I want while reality is pretty grim thanks to Trump and the Deplorables out there making the Covid-19 crisis worse.
In recent decades Hollywood foisted some pretty lame leading men upon us, but IMO David Corenswet is pretty great leading men material.
by Anonymous | reply 273 | July 12, 2020 6:03 PM |
It's much wiser to go the supporting route and get a plumb Aunt Jackie or Karen Walker role. That way if the movie or show bombs, you name doesn't become poison because you aren't the lead.

R274 Whaaaaaat? Laurie Metcalf and Megan Mullally are so gifted with comedy. It seems a unwarranted at this point to suggest Cornysweat has the option to emulate their sitcom choices.

by Anonymous | reply 283 | July 12, 2020 8:36 PM |
R282 Because in the Polititian he has a very limited role and his character is sympathetic compared with the uberambitious asshole who plays Ben Platt. He basically is there to be cute and be lovable
by Anonymous | reply 284 | July 12, 2020 8:38 PM |
Ben Platt is just too fucking ugly to be a lead on television. Hopefully he has no larger screen ambitions. He looks like a gross fem midget troll.
by Anonymous | reply 285 | July 12, 2020 8:42 PM |
Aside from when he sports a scary shaggy mustache, I think Ben is cute. He’s adorkable. If you’re comparing him to Sweatycorns, you’re obviously comparing a male model to an average, goofy-looking guy, but Platt is not ugly.

R285 Ben Platt can act and that's what it matters. He is an actor not a model and there are a good bunch of shows whose lead actor is not hot

Divine Inspiration - As Himself R289
by Anonymous | reply 290 | July 12, 2020 9:21 PM |
r288 I actually think he's an average actor in the vein of early Armie Hammer or Tudors Henry Cavill. Pretty boys that spend so much time trying to act extra masculine that they come off a little wooden. Corenswet isn't in Keanu territory, so there is hope, but he's no better than a lot of guys on teenage dramas.
He hasn't been given a shot with good material so I'm rooting for him and will watch almost all of his stuff since he's hot.
by Anonymous | reply 291 | July 12, 2020 9:54 PM |
He has great potential to one day in the not-too-distant future to become a popular WHET topic.

R276, I didn't mean that he should do comedy. Those were just two examples of the supporting character being better than the lead.

Robert Pattinson Batman x David Corenswet Superman. That’s all I’m saying.
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 296 | July 13, 2020 2:23 AM |
I'd say he has potential for leading man roles, but it depends on his choice of roles. He needs to stay away from dreck like The Politician and hone his acting chops. I do find him a cut above the usual pretty boys Hollywood peddles our way. Classic old Hollywood looks.
by Anonymous | reply 298 | July 13, 2020 6:16 AM |
God, Pattinson looks awful on that pic. He is not traditionally handsome but he generally looks way better.
Superman is a character that was completely destroyed by Henry Cavill (i suppose it was not only his fault), he played him like Superman was some kind of angry dark character when that was never the case
by Anonymous | reply 299 | July 13, 2020 12:08 PM |
R295 But in those cases, the supporting actors were better than the leads.
by Anonymous | reply 300 | July 13, 2020 12:20 PM |
Corenswet is awfully pretty, but pretty took an actor a whole lot further in 1920 than it does in 2020. These days, gritty realism is essential to most drama. Corenswet's pretty face is going to be working against him in most of those roles. He may have a VERY difficult time finding that meaty role that will take him to the top.
by Anonymous | reply 302 | July 13, 2020 1:34 PM |
R302 Since The Sopranos, I’ve felt strongly that part of HBO’s high quality formula is that they (often) reject typical Hollywood looks-based casting and instead go for 1) exceptional actors and 2) average-looking people who are more relatable, because you’re feeling them more than you are objectifying them.

I think after Trump, entertainment media will (gently) push for more sophistication and class (as in proper social etiquette) where people are more considerate (I mean, part of the #metoo movement is that you should treat others with more respect or else get your ass handed to you for being an unprofessional creep).
And I think superhero movies will reflect that by being less about depression and brooding and more old school good vs.bad and that may include the physical appeal of lean and fit instead of steroid queen muscular (especially when more actions stars come forward about how bad it's for their health to take all these supplements to get in shape quick for a movie role).
Corenswet's Superman could go in that direction.

R308 A Superman film is destined to flop (and probably make derail the career of the actor).
Right now people want dark superheros (with tons of traumas) and Superman is not that way. And when you play him that way it's as ridiculous as Cavill's superman

Not from DC. All the Zac Snyder stuff flopped hard. Superman is part of the DC universe. What was successful was Wonder Woman. Apart from a female lead can you guess why? That is why Corenswet would be a good choice.

No, that's not necessarily true for Marvel or even Aquaman/Ironman. Usually, a bad crime happens, and the superhero spends the time getting the villain.
by Anonymous | reply 335 | July 22, 2020 8:58 AM |
Why do you all go on and on about fucking superman/batman crap! You talk like it's something of overwhelming importance. Fucking rubbish all of it for teenage kids. These endless films of things being blown up, the world coming to an end being saved by one muscly man usually having fisty cuffs with one other man. Pathetic, mind numbing shite. As to 'Hollywood' the moment they watered it down to make it paletable to hertosexuals by having the rent boys service housewives. I laughed my fucking arse off. How many housewives do you know bored or otherwise use male prostitutes? Read Scott Bowers. The vast majority of clients were male. It was one of the few ways guys could meet guys for sex. 40's housewives wouldn't put the lights on or take off their nighties to have sex with their husbands let alone go cruising and paying for men! Laughable. If Corenswet's character had drawn the line so morally at not doing men, he'd have earned fucking nothing. End of story.

R336 Maybe it's because that's all HW produce now, superhero films and remakes. That's all.

by Anonymous | reply 338 | July 22, 2020 3:04 PM |
“Curiously being in superhero smash hit doesn't make you a star anymore“
Because 75 percent of theatrical features are now superhero flicks. They’re a dime a dozen. And they’re not special because there are also so many superhero TV shows that air weekly. If you are into the genre and you can turn on The CW and see Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl (which has cameos of Superman) and several dozen other superhero shows on other networks—who cares about a single movie?
Many of us are just entirely burnt out on formulaic superhero movies, anyway. For every Wonder Woman (which was different only because it was about a woman—the whole vanquish-the-evil-enemy and love affair thing was typical formulaic fodder) and Black Panther, there are 25 unremarkable superhero movies—Spider-Man, Spiderman Part II, Spiderman Part II-B, Superman Reboot, Spiderman Reboot Prequel Part III. Ugh.
I really resent Marvel for having taken over entertainment.
And Superman is DC, good guys vs. bad guys and no decent gray area, so at this point what can be interesting about Superman? He’s not supposed to be brooding and despondent like Batman. And he stands for a United States no one believes in anymore. Maybe if DC made a movie about the POTUS having kryptonite in his blood, it could be relatable. Otherwise, Superman was a sort of American god in our cultural lore, and no decent Americans believe in the goodness of this country any longer.
