Craig Goodwin is an Australian professional soccer player who has represented, as a forward/winger, Melbourne Heart FC (now known as Melbourne City FC) (2012), Newcastle United Jets FC (2012-2014), and Adelaide United FC (2014-2016, 2018-2019, 2022-Present) in Australia; Sparta Rotterdam (2016-2018) in the Netherlands; and Al Wehda FC (2019-2022) in Saudi Arabia. He has also spent loan spells with Abha Football Club (2020-2021) in Saudi Arabia and Adelaide United FC (2021-2022) in Australia. With Adelaide United FC, he won both the A-League (the top division of the Australian soccer league system) Championship and the A-League Premiership in the 2015–16 season. In the A-League, the winner of the 26-round regular season is dubbed the season’s ‘Premier’. In contrast, the winner of the Finals Series (that culminates with a grand final match) that involves the 6 highest-placed teams in the regular season is dubbed the season’s ‘Champion’. The 2015–16 season double triumph made Adelaide United FC the ‘Champion’ of the A-League for the 1st time and the ‘Premier’ for the 2nd time. With the club, he also won the FFA Cup (now known as the Australia Cup) (the premier domestic knockout soccer competition in Australia) in 2018, the club’s 2nd such title. At the international level, Craig represented Australia at the under-23 tier before making his senior national debut in July 2013.

    Craig Goodwin Facts

  • Craig’s youth career began with a local amateur team called Munno Para City Football Club which is based in Munno Para, a northern suburb of his hometown of Adelaide. He later spent some time with the youth team of Para Hills Knights SC, a soccer club based in Para Hills West, a suburb in the north of Adelaide.
  • He eventually joined the youth system of Adelaide Croatia Raiders SC, a club that was competing in the South Australian Super League (now known as the National Premier Leagues South Australia), a semi-professional competition in the state of South Australia that is a subdivision of the second tier National Premier Leagues which in turn falls below the A-League in the Australian soccer league system.
  • In 2009, Craig was promoted to the senior team of Adelaide Croatia Raiders SC and stayed with them until 2010. In 2011, he was signed up by Oakleigh Cannons FC, a soccer club based in the southeast Melbourne suburb of Oakleigh, Victoria, Australia. The club was competing in the Victorian Premier League (now known as the National Premier Leagues Victoria), the Victorian counterpart of the National Premier Leagues South Australia.
  • Craig began competing in the top division of the Australian soccer league system in 2012 when he joined Melbourne Heart FC in the A-League. In his senior professional debut for the club, he won the ‘Man of the Match’ award.
  • For his performances in the 2015–16 season, he was named Adelaide United FC‘s ‘Player of the Year’.
  • In October 2018, Craig scored both of Adelaide United FC‘s goals in their 2-1 win over Sydney FC in the final of the FFA Cup. His performance won him the ‘Mark Viduka Medal’, an award that has been presented annually, since 2014, to the ‘Player of the Match’ in the final of the FFA Cup (now known as the Australia Cup).
  • He also became the first Australian to win this award which has been instituted to honor the legendary forward Mark Viduka who captained the Australian national soccer team at the 2006 edition of the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup.
  • As of November 2022, Craig was Adelaide United FC‘s all-time leading goalscorer.
  • In November 2022, in Australia’s opening group stage match of the 2022 edition of the FIFA World Cup, against defending champions France, he scored a 9th-minute goal to give Australia a shock 1-0 lead in the match. This was Australia’s first goal in the FIFA World Cup from open play since 2014. France eventually won the match convincingly, by a 4-1 margin.
  • This was Craig’s 2nd senior-level international goal for Australia having scored his maiden goal in January 2022 – the 3rd goal in Australia’s 4-0 win over Vietnam in a match that was a part of the qualification process for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
  • Australia bounced back from the aforementioned defeat against France to record successive 1-0 wins against Tunisia and Denmark. This was the first instance of Australia recording 2 wins in a single edition of the FIFA World Cup. Before this, Australia had won only 2 other matches in the FIFA World Cup – a 3-1 group-stage win against Japan in 2006 and a 2-1 group-stage win against Serbia in 2010.
  • The 2022 FIFA World Cup also became just the 2nd edition of the tournament where Australia advanced to the knockout phase – the first and only other such occasion was in 2006 when Australia reached the pre-quarterfinal stage and lost by a 1-0 margin to eventual champions Italy.
  • In 2022, Australia lost its pre-quarterfinal match to the eventual champions again – this time by a 2-1 margin to Argentina. Coincidentally, France, the other team that defeated Australia at the 2022 FIFA World Cup also made it to the final of the tournament.
